Struggle for Freedom of Languages in India is the result of 25 years of sustained and committed research on Tamilnadu’s fight against the imposition of Hindi. Dr. A Ramasamy, the author, has taken pains interview the people connected with the agitation from various walks of life such as former Chief Ministers, Inspector Generals of Police, Politicians of different hues, relevant general public, bureaucrats and the then student leaders. He has also consulted voluminous authentic government records and files related to the agitation from 1938 to 1968.
Dr. A. Ramasamy is a renowned scholar of history, author of many titles and and a seasoned educational administrator. Born on 19th December 1943 in Madurai, he studied history in Pachaiyappa’s College, Chennai. He obtained Ph.D. from Madurai Kamaraj University in 1995 and taught history in various government colleges in Tamilnadu. He was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Alagappa University. Karaikudi in 2000 and the Vice-Chairman of Tamilnadu State Council for Higher Education in 2006.
This book meticulously traces the steps taken to introduce Hindi in school curriculum and the stiff opposition that arose as an aftermath It elaborately enumerates the deliberations of the constituent assembly to make Hindi as the sole official language of the Union Government of India. The book graphically describes the various emotional and violent events connected with the 1965 agitation that raged for over 50 days in Tamilnadu claiming hundreds of lives and thousands left wounded.
